Mid-South SFPE

The history of the Mid-South Chapter starts in January 2002 when Jerry Vuoso, a then recent transplant to the Memphis area, attended the January meeting of the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the SFPE to propose the establishment of a Mid-South Branch of the chapter. The membership unanimously approved this proposal during the meeting. This was followed by the approval of the chapter Board of Directors. In April 2002 the local Chamber of Commerce was contacted for a list of local business. Many informal contacts and discussions were held and in August 2002 an organizational letter was sent out to selected business. With encouraging response to this letter an organization meeting was held on March 13, 2003 with the individuals present voting to move forward with establishing a chapter branch in Memphis to be known as the Mid-South Branch – TVSFPE. The first branch meeting was held on April 22, 2003 followed with meetings in May, June, September, October and November. Meeting attendance was above expectation and the branch had recruited 6 national members with branch membership growing.

With the growth of the branch and very successful meetings the branch leaders discussed the possibility of becoming a separate chapter and in March 2004 the TVSFPE Boards of Directors voted to support the establishment of the Mid-South Chapter – SFPE. On March 31, 2004 the SFPE Board of Directors approved the establishment of a separate chapter to be known as the Mid-South Chapter –SFPE. April 20, 2004 was the first meeting as a chapter.

During the November 28, 2004 chapter meeting, Dave Evans, Executive Director – SFPE lead the chapter Installation Ceremony. The chapter has been meeting regularly since with the chapter growing to now include over 100 individuals on the regular mailing list. Meetings are normally held on the third Tuesday of every month except July, August and December. Meetings are held at the Memphis Central Library at 300 PM.
