Meeting Minutes
April 29, 2008
We met in the large conference room at the Hooks Central Library.
Jerry Vuoso chaired the meeting.
Item: Terry Hughes will present his “We cannot afford to gamble with life safety” to a Memphis Council Committee on Tuesday May 20 at 2 PM. [Note that our next meeting is the same day at 3 PM.]
Jerry introduced Randall Price, PhD who is a professor in the Chemical and Bioengineering program at Christian Brothers University.
Topic Teaching Industrial Safety to University Students
[PowerPoint presentation]
Key concept: “…the engineer shall hold paramount the health, safety and welfare of the public”. Engineers have been learning from failure since 2600 BC.
Why teach safety in engineering education?
“Learn good behaviors before bad habits.”
ABET [Accreditation Board of Engineering & Technology]
Safety (added in 2000)
REAL Objective: “Know enough to ask questions & ask for help.”
Discussion Is there some interest in evening courses toward a “safety certificate”?
Building engineers, loss prevention personnel, other adults?
Ideas to broaden enrollment of CBU and other local colleges?
Business students, all engineering disciplines?
Is the issue of workplace safety, an ethics issue? Perhaps making public and employee safety in process engineering, in building maintenance and in management (supervisor to general manager) an ethics discussion would broaden interest. …Doing the RIGHT design, procedures, over-sight, maintenance and training may avoid financial and physical mistakes.
