We had encouraged our contact list to participate in a ceremony, lunch and speaker on Ethics which was held at the Fogelman Executive Center, University of Memphis. The Societies of Civil and Military Engineers co-hosted the induction of engineers into the “Order of the Engineer”. We avowed to be of service in our practice of engineering and deal honorably. This is an interesting “Order” started in Canada and has been tweaked for its use in the US. A PE is not required but an engineering degree completed or anticipated is required. We were glad to meet a small group of senior U of M civil engineers students who also participated in the oath. There were approximately 35 inductees this year.
Professor Bevalee B. Pray, Executive Director for the new Center for Ethical Leadership at CBU presented several tactics for balancing ethical and moral choices. A relative new concept is “Right vs Right” rather the much used, but ill suited to many situations of, “Right vs Wrong”. I found a web link to the paradigm: http://faculty.tamu-commerce.edu/jreynolds/Kidder,%20Tough%20Choices.htm formatted by Rushworth Kidder who will be coming to Memphis.
